Microcosm explores the diverse ecosystem of a single rockpool on Castle Beach, Falmouth, UK. I revisited this microhabitat daily for 7 months, over the course of countless low tides, to document both its regular inhabitants and unexpected visitors left behind by the tide.
Beneath the surface, the vibrant life within the rockpool remains largely untouched by the changing seasons. This gave me the opportunity to capture the beauty of the otherworldly creatures that inhabit the rockpool and the diversity of life unfolding within it.
Among the rocks and seaweed, a tiny world thrives. Blue-rayed limpets shimmer like jewels on kelp fronds, brittle stars unfurl their delicate arms across the rockpool floor, and sea slugs glide gracefully atop vividly coloured seaweed. Each creature is a marvel of adaptation and beauty, evolved to endure the rockpool’s shifting tides, fluctuating temperatures and unforgiving conditions.
By sharing the wonders of this single, seemingly unassuming rockpool, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the extraordinarily beautiful life often unseen and underappreciated, lingering just beyond the edge of our awareness.
